Half way point!

I've been here for five weeks.... it seems like forever and it's flown by at the same time!
Anita just left, which was sad because she's been my buddy since I got here. Glitterati love!!!!
I miss Sylvia too.... she was the third part of our three muskateers!

So much has happened....
three weekends ago:
we went to gabe's apartment in the grad housing and chilled out there, then had a party in john's apartment the next night

two weekends ago:
wednesday night: we went to a poetry slam and got chili's afterwards
thursday: salsa dancing at taco milagro!! met Andres, Fortune, Christian and met some interesting people
Friday: downtown at Jefe's with Sylvia, Anita, Jasmine, Matt, and John Aguilar.... We got in as 21 and the wristbands said "certified drinking age" and I was the only white girl there lol
Saturday: salsa dancing again! this time at Tropicana... I got to dance with a guy in a Batman shirt who was AMAZING
oh and Anita and I watched the entire avatar series in about four days from saturday till thursday hahahaha

Last weekend:
We hung out in our room almost every night because we'd put the extra mattresses on the floor
Thursday we hung out and watched random music videos till about 2 am
Friday was everyone's last night here so there was a party up on the fourth floor that most people stopped by to say bye
Anita and I went to a bbq at gabe's apartment last night with some random people from that program which was really fun and chill

And right now it's sunday morning.
Anita and I went for a walk around the campus and took pictures and then she left about 20 minutes ago.
It feels so empty here.
I got so attached to everyone in the past 5 weeks and now I'm the only one left....
I'm moving to the Extended Stay place in a few hours; lucia is helping me move which is AWESOME
I can't help feeling that I'm gonna be more lonely because I'm so far removed from campus...
Still, Matt will be around for a while and then Lawrence will come back and I'll meet all the new Rice people
and the other john promised to come back to visit...

Only 5 weeks left till I get back to cali!!

Fourth of July Weekend

The first week in the lab was amazing!
There's two postdocs: Lucia and Lisa
grad students: Jerrad, Wendell, two Sarahs, Naxeily, and I think that's it....
A guy named Andy (I think he's a postdoc but he may just be a faculty member, i'm not sure)
and the Undergrads: Savina, James, Abbie, and I!

Jerrad took me under his wing for most of the first week because Lucia was still in Spain and I finished most of my work by about 1 or 2.
Didn't do much during the days after work except read/work out/ watch things on my laptop.

Then came the weekend.
First was Friday night, we were partying up in Carmelita's room and we played circle of death and salsa danced... I met Matt, Shantelle, Brenden, Tanya, Vikki, and Crist.... I had already met Nelson and Jess my first night here.
I went wandering around with Brenden after we finished playing circle of death... Danced salsa and tango with matt and some of the other guys

Saturday morning we got up and went to Buffalo Bill's wild wings which is in Rice Village... It was me, Sylvia, Anita, and Dre. On the way there it started POURING rain, so we jumped in a car that was being driven by a guy that andre knew.
We got food and then a bunch more people showed up to watch the Spain vs. Paraguay world cup game, which was amazing (spain won 1-0)
We all piled in Matt's car to get back; there were five of us in the backseat and I was squished up on top of all the guys hahaha

Saturday night.... We started partying up in Sylvia's room after going on an errand run but it took forever and we couldn't find anywhere to buy stuff, so we started partying around 10 or 11. I was drinking buddies with Crist and we left with Matt and Carla partway through to get more stuff but that part was confusing; I don't know the area very well yet

When we got back the party had moved up to Ross and Dom's room so the music was really loud. We cleared out the bedroom to make a dance floor and went crazy... then the cops rolled up and we had to quiet down and clear out. Dre and I walked Anita down cause she wasn't feeling too hot. Once we got her taken care of we went back up to Dre's room and chilled out for a while. Everyone else left except me and Ross, then Andre came back so Ross and I sat outside till about 6 am.

Sylvia called me at 8 the next morning cause she'd been locked out of her room, then I slept till 12 till Matt called me because he'd disappeared before the cops came the night before.

We were all moving really slowly and went to the 59 diner for a late lunch/breakfast then just chilled out and watched movies until we went to Arindam's for a 4th of July party which was awesome once the dance floor formed.

Today was my first day with Lucia there; I also met Dr. Bartel!! I was tired as hell so I only absorbed some of the information, but Lucia is amazing and Dr. Bartel is just plain awesome.

I just got back from going to Smoothie King and Sonic with Matt, Anita, and Sylvia which was fun...

This summer got started really fast and crazy lol. I can't believe I've only been here a week; it feels so much longer.
I'm going to miss everyone here so much when they leave halfway through my time here.

The weather has actually been kind of nice. That, or I'm just getting used to the heat.
Oh, except that we got the tail end of a hurricane last week. That was interesting.

So far, it looks like everything really is bigger in Texas.

First Day

Being here is pretty much one giant culture shock right now.

I packed up my life as it is into two large suitcases, a small bag, and a backpack.
I got on my plane from Sacramento at about noon and made it to my dorm (Weiss college) at Rice by about 7.

First impression of Houston: holy crap it's hot but so pretty and green
It's a big city, but it was really empty while we were driving through it.
The college itself is gorgeous; all the buildings are made of brick and pretty old. There's lots of random fields throughout the campus, which is a change from having everything laid out in a circle.

Once I got in I hung out with my roommate, Anita, and the other guy from our program, Andre. We were about to tour the dorm area when we ran into Jess and Nelson, who were about to get food so we tagged along. Jess is from texas originally and drove this beautiful big Ford F-150 truck.. We went to Chick-fil-a so it was a pretty "texan" experience if you can call it that, haha.

We then tried to go to "the biggest pool party ever" which involved waiting in line outside of a building for about an hour and a half... but it was so packed with people that we couldn't get in.
Oh, and I was pretty much the only white girl in the entire vicinity.
CULTURE SHOCK.

I love it so far, I just feel kind of lost.
I have yet to explore everything, so I only really know where my dorm is and where my lab is.... And I'm still on Cali time.

To all my cali friends: I miss you guys SO much.
I've been here a day and I'm already homesick for Cali. I know ten weeks will fly by and I'm going to have some amazing times here, but I miss heat without the humidity!

I'm off to spend the rest of my day reading scientific papers and exploring the campus some more...

One week left

I have exactly 7 days left until I leave for Texas.

For those of who don't know, here's a quick summary:
I was nominated for the HHMI EXROP program, which is a 10 week long summer research program.
It's highly prestigious, but I didn't know that until after I got in.
I'll be working with Dr. Bonnie Bartel doing research with arabidopsis and auxin.
In simple terms, I'll be figuring out the mechanisms by which plant growth hormone is produced and regulated. (I think).
I'll be in Rice University in Houston for pretty much the entire summer.

I've never been to Texas, so this will be interesting- to say the least.
